Background of the Study

Child labor remains a pervasive issue in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas like Bida Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger State, where poverty and limited educational opportunities force many children into exploitative labor. Communication campaigns serve as vital tools for raising awareness, advocating for policy reforms, and mobilizing communities to combat child labor. By leveraging mass media, community engagement, and participatory communication methods, campaigns can challenge cultural norms, highlight the importance of education, and empower families to seek alternatives to child labor (Musa & Bello, 2023; Yusuf et al., 2024). Recent studies reveal that targeted communication campaigns that integrate local traditions and involve key stakeholders—such as parents, teachers, and local leaders—are highly effective in reducing child labor (Ahmed et al., 2025). This study investigates the role of communication campaigns in combating child labor in Bida LGA, focusing on strategies that promote education and social welfare.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Child labor persists as a major socio-economic challenge in Bida LGA, despite efforts by governmental and non-governmental organizations to address the issue. Many interventions fail to achieve meaningful results due to inadequate communication strategies that do not address the root causes or engage the community effectively (Ojo et al., 2023). Cultural acceptance of child labor and the lack of accessible education further compound the problem, leaving many children trapped in exploitative conditions (Okonkwo & Adebayo, 2024). This study assesses the effectiveness of communication campaigns in combating child labor and fostering community-led solutions in Bida LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of communication campaigns in raising awareness about the dangers of child labor in Bida LGA.

  2. To identify effective communication strategies for promoting alternatives to child labor in Bida LGA.

  3. To assess the impact of communication campaigns on reducing the prevalence of child labor in Bida LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do communication campaigns raise awareness about the dangers of child labor in Bida LGA?

  2. What communication strategies are most effective in promoting alternatives to child labor in Bida LGA?

  3. What is the impact of communication campaigns on reducing the prevalence of child labor in Bida LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Communication campaigns significantly raise awareness about the dangers of child labor in Bida LGA.

  2. Certain communication strategies are more effective in promoting alternatives to child labor in Bida LGA.

  3. Communication campaigns positively impact the reduction of child labor prevalence in Bida LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study provides valuable insights into the use of communication campaigns as a tool for combating child labor. Its findings will inform the design of impactful communication interventions that address the socio-economic and cultural drivers of child labor. By emphasizing community engagement and participatory approaches, the study contributes to global efforts to eliminate child labor and promote education, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The research is limited to Bida Local Government Area, Niger State, focusing on the role of communication campaigns in addressing child labor and promoting education.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Communication Campaigns: Coordinated efforts using various communication strategies to raise awareness and drive social change.

  2. Child Labor: The involvement of children in work that deprives them of their childhood, education, and well-being.

  3. Bida Local Government Area: A region in Niger State, Nigeria, where child labor is a prevalent socio-economic challenge.
